Created by Benjamin Partridge, The Owlery focuses on the development of surface pattern design, developing complex or interesting surface patterns from single motifs.
The Owlery produce bold and individual home and giftware using lino cut and screen print surface designs featuring animal based designs.
Print designs are predominantly inspired by the British woodland and current affairs relating to the protection of British animals and insects, as well as a general fascination by the world around us.
Throughout school Benjamin was heavily interested in textiles and music and used to channel his creativity by playing the flute and piano. When he was training to be a teacher he fell in love with printing and after attending a course at Sheffield Print Club soon discovered a flair for printmaking.
Benjamin is inspired by David Attenborough and he says he spends far too many hours watching his documentaries on repeat! Benjamin gets loads of ideas for animal-themed prints from watching Attenborough explore the Amazon, head up a sky scraper in New York or head into the Sahara.
Benjamin designs, makes and sells textile, ceramic and paper products which are functional and visually appealing with just a hint of whimsy, as well as original fine art, screen and lino prints, often combining textile skills and elements of stitch.
Benjamin’s favourite surface pattern design is his bee design. It really came about more from a happy accident rather than an intended design! He had wanted to repeat the design but he didn’t set out for it to develop in the way that it did. If you look closely you will see that the shapes between the bees are as captivating as the print design itself.
Benjamin has exhibited at trade fairs as well as retail shows over the last few years but this is the first time we have showcased his work here at Heart Gallery and we are really pleased to be bringing you a great collection for Autumn/Winter 2017.
