Kit Anderson is the artist behind Foto Ceramica.
She works from her Nottingham studio where she makes a range of hand-built and slip-cast vessels, wall pieces , planters and jewellery.
Kit studied and exhibited as a photographer for many years. Eventually her love of ceramics led to 26 years as a ceramic teacher and technician.
Kit’s simple idea was to find a photographic process to decorate ceramics, rather than the many printed processes that she had seen and tried. As a photographer she is never far from a camera. She can capture the many interesting things she sees around her, whether a landscape or flower , or something that catches her eye like the birds in the trees or an old bike outside a shop. The photographs she likes are then turned into negatives.
Kit hand builds all her large vessels, pebble planters and plaques. She uses a white E/W clay which is decorated with coloured slips. These sit alongside a range of slip cast vases and vessels and the square format ’tiles. She then decorates each piece using her uniquely modified photographic Gum Bi-Chromate process. This exposes her original photographs directly onto the surface of the ceramic piece where they are fired on permanently.
After exposure , the surface is carefully washed in water where, little by little the unhardened areas are removed which reveals the photographic image. The piece is then ready to be fired and the image becomes permanent. Some pieces can be further coloured by hand tinting with underglazes and re-fired.
Here at Heart Gallery we adore Kit’s work which has just arrived with us for Summer 2018. Hopefully we can stock Kit’s work permanently moving forward as we know you will love it too. Each piece has a subtle monochrome palette with a beguiling narrative feel. Her images capture her fascination with the urban and natural landscape , and in particular birds and botanicals.
